1. When you log in to the Deputy app on your phone you can see your upcoming shift on the Home tab.
2. Tap on Start Shift in 'Area' to review your shift details and tap on Start Shift to begin your shift.
You can also start and end breaks on this screen and also End Shift when you have completed your shift.
Tip: Can't see the button to start a shift on the Home page or can't start a shift?
- The Start shift button will not appear on the Home page if your organisation is subscribed to a Deputy plan (such as Scheduling only) that does not allow the use of the clock in and out functionality.
- You will receive a warning message and be blocked from starting a shift if your organisation has configured Deputy to not allow you to start shifts from the mobile app.
- Your employer may need you to have Location Settings/GPS turned on (you can do this in your phone options). This is to ensure that you are starting your shift at your work location. We do not continuously track the location of the users. The location is only captured at the start of a shift, start/end of a meal break and at end of a shift. For more information about location capture or access permissions on the mobile app read Location Capture and Data Access and Permissions and Data Usage.

Clock In and Out with SMS
To start your shift with SMS:
1. Reply to the message sent to you with your shifts for the week. If the shift was scheduled, send "start shift".
If it's an unscheduled shift, send "start shift name_of_department".
2. To take a break, send "break shift". You can do this to start and end a break. You can do this as many times as you need to when on shift.
Below, you can see the break was started and ended with "break shift". If you forget to take your break, you can add it when you end your shift (see below).
3. To end your shift, send "stop shift". If you forgot to add your break, send "stop shift X". X is the number of minutes of break you took. "Stop shift 5" means you're stopping your shift and took a 5 minute break.
Automatic timesheet clock in for scheduled hours
If you don't need your team members to clock in but instead want to automatically generate timesheets for the hours as scheduled, you can use a Deputy Extension to automatically clock them on and off.
Read Shift and Break Extensions for more information on how to set this up.
Starting an unscheduled shift
In the examples presented above, the team member was scheduled to work a shift.
However, you can still clock on to work a shift even if you have not been scheduled to work.
To do this, from the Home screen, tap Start unscheduled shift. On the next screen, select the area that you will be working in.
Review the shift details or any pre-shift questions and tap Start Shift.
Note: your manager may have configured a setting to ensure you can not start an unscheduled shift if you do not have the required training to work in that area.
