When does daily and weekly overtime "reset" in Deputy?
Deputy generally uses a calendar day and calendar week to determine the number of hours of daily and weekly overtime worked, as well as "outside span of hours" overtime.
However, there is one important exception to this. If a shift crosses over midnight, Deputy does not reset the overtime until that shift ends. Instead, the after-midnight hours are attributed to the prior calendar day for purposes of calculating the number of hours of overtime worked that day and week. If the employee then comes back to work for a new shift later in the day, overtime will have been "reset" and Deputy will not count the hours worked earlier that same calendar day to that calendar day's overtime count.
We know this can be complex, so please see the examples below for clarification. If you would like to customize your account to have overtime function differently, this is available in Deputy Enterprise. Please contact support@deputy.com for more information.
Overtime examples
For all of the following examples, for the sake of simplicity, please assume that no penalty rates apply, and the modern award requires daily overtime to be paid for all hours over 7.6 in a day at 1.5x for the first 2 hours, and 2.0x thereafter.
Example A: Jane works a 12-hour shift on Monday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Deputy will apply daily overtime to Jane's timesheet as follows:
- 2 hours at 1.5x
- 2.4 hours at 2.0x
Example B: Same as above except Jane works the 12-hour shift from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am. Same outcome as above.
Example C: Same as example B, except after Jane ends her shift at 5:00 am, she then comes back to work later that same day at 1:00pm, and works until midnight. Deputy will apply daily overtime to Jane's timesheet as follows:
- Shift 1 (5:00 pm to 5:00 am): 2 hours at 1.5x, and 2.4 hours at 2.0x
- Shift 2 (1:00 pm to midnight): 2 hours at 1.5x, and 1.4 hours at 2.0x
- Shift 1 (5:00 pm to 5:00 am): 2 hours at 1.5x, and 2.4 hours at 2.0x
- Shift 2 (1:00 pm to 2:00 am): 2 hours at 1.5x, and 3.4 hours at 2.0x
